Winter League Party!

Ok, we're doing things a little differently this time. But in a good way, not in a way that makes you all uncomfortable. That wouldn't be cool. This is a 2-part party. And, it's all hpapening on Saturday, March 10!

Part 1: Winter Fun
We're still figuring this all out, possibly sliding, possibly skating. Either way, it'll be an afternoon winter activity!

Part 2: Party
Same deal as always, great specials, great fun, semi-decent company... :) Drop down to Turkey's anytime after 9.

Stay tuned for more details.

Winter League

Winter league is in full swing, and everything seems to be going quite smoothly! Remember, if you have a suggestion, question or issue, please email us at milezeroultimate@gmail.com. Another few small things to remind people of:

  • If you aren't playing, but want to get in on the action, remember, you can join our active sub list here. Subbing has changed a bit this year (first game free, every game after is $8, you can sub 8 games total!).
  • Remember, games end at a hard cap at 8:55 / 9:55 / 10:55. If the disc is in the air, you can catch it ... but that's it. Games over. Even if it's the dreaded tie. There is a whistle that signals the end, as administered by an MZU boardie.
  • We are introducing a new refund policy to compensate those injured in the first few games, so stay tuned for that.

New Subbing Policy - Winter

Posted: Sunday, January 15, 4:25pm

For Winter, we are piloting a NEW subbing policy. Here's the details:

- Subs can now play up to 8 games.

- The first game is free

- Each game after that will cost $8. You play, we invoice you via PayPal, you pay. No pay = no play next time (whether that's registering for future leagues or subbing again).

- An MZU Board Member will touch base with every team to record what subs they are using.

If you'd like to sub, enter your details at the link below:

This list is meant to help teams looking for subs and for subs find games. This won't guarantee you get a game, but it will certainly increase the odds.

Winter League Notes!
Jan
07
Posted: Saturday, January 7, 10:57am

So, winter league starts THIS MONDAY, and here's a few FAQs about how it will go!
How will the schedule work?
18 teams will allow us to run with three divisions of 6 teams. The first divisions will be totally random, and each team will play 4 of the 5 teams within their division.
After week 4, we'll re-rank the teams into new divisions. The top 2 teams in each division will form one division, the middle two another and the bottom two a third. Then we'll play another set of 4 games.
After week 8, the bottom two teams from Division 1 will swap places with the top two teams from Division 2 and the bottom two teams from Division 2 will swap places with the top two teams from Division 3. Another set of four games will be played to end the regular season and the ladder will shift again as described above

‪‪Any spots left... I'd still like to play‬‬
As of this morning, there is still room for 11 males and five females. If you want to play, sign-up. You'll initially be put on the waitlist, but we'll clear you ASAP and as soon as you're paid up, we'll assign you to a team.

‪‪8, 9 or 10pm?‬
We recognize that a lot of people aren't enthused about playing at 10 pm. On average, each team will only play 1/3rd of their games at 10pm. Due to the demands of the schedule, we can't guarantee that every team will play exactly 1/3 of the 10pm games, but we will do our best to balance it out.

How were the teams formed?
Do to a lack of interested drafters, coupled with scheduling issues for those who were interested, the planned draft was sadly scrapped. Instead a selection of board members got together to make the teams, using a modified draft.

Between self-ranking and sharp judgement, we put in a lot of hours to make these teams fair.
As per past MZU team building exercises, players were split into groups. As there would be ten players per team, there were ten draft groups - six male groups and four female groups. Each group would correspond to a specific draft round (ie. females in Group 3 would be assigned to the third round of females.) The initial groups were formed by looking at the combined skill ranking as entered by each of the players. Then the league committee moved a few players around if it was felt that they were ranked too low or too high to achieve as good of a balance as possible.Once the groups were built, the players were then assigned to the teams using a modified "Snake Order Draft." Essentially this means that the team that gets the first player in one round, gets the last pick in the following round. Each board member in attendance took turns assigning players to each of the teams. This way, no one board member was responsible for building any one team, but it avoided the pitfall of randomly assigning players within each group. If a selected player had a partner, the partner was also assigned to that team.

It was our hope that this process lead to teams that weren't one-dimensional (ie. all receivers).

Board of Directors - Say
Nov
23
Posted: Wednesday, November 23, 11:00am

At the Annual General Meeting on November 22nd, 2011, the outgoing board made way for the new board as we prepare for 2012.

The new board will consist of:

President :: Stefan Barnes
VP-League :: Adam Drover
VP-Finance :: Paul Doucet
VP-Communications :: Sophie Harrington
VP-Social :: Craig Stoyles
Members-at-Large (6) :: Roger Crowley, Dan Follett, Tiago Hori, Rob Langridge, Karen Lawlor and, Mike White.
Past-President :: Craig Ennis

This board will take the leadership role in running MZU throughout 2012.

Outgoing Members

With five brand new members joining the board and another returning after a one-year hiatus, we also say good-bye to several board members. Two resigned later in the year, while another three decided not to run for re-election for the upcoming season. In particular, I would like to acknowledge two longstanding members for their past service. Without them, MZU would not be what it is today!

Nora Trask, first served on the Board of Directors of the NLUA (the pre-cursor to UNL) back in 2005 when it ran MZU as their major line of business. Since that time she served many roles on the board including multiple years on the Executive filling the roles of Vice-President, Treasurer and League Commissioner.

Mike Walter, joined the NLUA board mid-season 2006, and moved over to the MZU board when it broke free of the NLUA clutches in 2007. In addition to serving as Vice-President and League Commissioner, Mike has been responsible for many of the technology advances made by the league over the years... except for the web site, he takes no credit or blame for anything on the web site.

If you see either of these two, be sure to give 'em a pat on the back. They deserve it!

Fall League Award Winners

The Champs!

Congrats are in order to the Jamaican BobSled Team for taking home the Fall League Championship on November 13th. Team members include; Lisa Woodrow, Peter Thompson, Megan Richards, Juan Acevedo, Karl Hartmann, Aimee Sheppard, Steven Watt, Emily Newell, Peter Madden and, Aaron Hall.

Spirit Champs!

Proving that you don't have to sacrifice spirit in the name of competitive play, not only did the Jamaican BobSled Team win the league championships, they're also the Fall 2011 Spirit Champs after finishing a full point clear of the nearest competition.

On an individual note, we had five males and five females finish tied for the Spirit Player of the Season Award. Rather than have a "Nice-Off" amongst the finalists to determine who gets the associated prizes, names were drawn from a hat. For the Males, Jason Stevens of "Team X" was the winner, while Carla Myrick of the "Scoober Steve's" were declared the winner.

Games for October 30th Cancelled
Oct
30
Posted: Sunday, October 30, 7:30pm

Sorry for the extremely late notice but all games for October 30th have been cancelled due to weather.

Traditionally, we have tried to play Fall League regardless of weather since there is little chance of damaging the ground. Until tonight, in five years of playing on turf, we have never had to cancel a game. But the combination of high wind, driving rain and near freezing temperatures made the conditions unplayable. Several people were throwing at the field in Mount Pearl and the discs were all landing behind them,  often times out on the hill between the field and the parking lot. Cones stood no chance of holding their ground.

Tonight's games will be played next Sunday now in the same time slots. And the final night will now be November 13th.
