Teams made up of primarily new players may be assigned an experienced player who will act as mentor. The mentor will try to help new players and teams learn the game of ultimate. All mentored teams will play in Tier II while each mentor will also be on their own regular team in Tier I. Mentors will not be required to pay additional MZU fees to play on their mentored team, but will have to pay for their additional MZU Jersey for their mentored team (approximate cost $20).
Mentors should have at least two years of playing experience and be comfortable in a leadership and coaching roll. It is important for the mentor to be able to attend the majority of the team's games.
Mentors will have the ability to impart their knowledge by playing on the field with their mentored team, as well as by holding practices. The mentor will play on field with the mentored team and should receive the same amount of playing time as any other member of the team. Mentors will be eligible to play the entire regular season with their mentored team, but not during the playoffs (as they will be playing with their Tier I team on playoff day).
Mentors are expected to teach their teams the basic rules, skills and tactics of ultimate, and most importantly, spirit of the game. As the majority of players in MZU are there solely for recreation, they may not necessarily want to attend organized practices. However, mentors are encouraged to hold practices if the team requests. Although a team leader, the mentor should not serve in the role of team captain. They should assist the teams' selected captain in that role but it is important that the role is filled by another team member.
Mentor selection will take place following registration when the needs of the program are determined. Selection will take place by the MZU Board and selected mentors will be contacted by May 25th. Prior to being confirmed as mentors, all perspective players will need to attend a mentor training meeting.
